August 8th - Fort Rodd and Pacific Rim National Park
Fort Rodd National Historic Site

North of Victoria is Fort Rodd, an old naval defensive fortress now adjacent to the modern CFB Esquimault. Fort Rodd was used right up until the end of WW II and is in good condition today. The contrast of old and new was quite interesting.

Pacific Rim National Park

The world renowned Pacific Rim National Park is on the west side of Vancouver Island, but you unfortunately have to drive all the way to Nanaimo on the east coast and then head west across the island to get there. This is a big pain in the butt. We basically drove all day and hurriedly set up camp and collapsed. If the campsite looks spartan it was because there was a bear alert and all campsites had to be kept completely bare or you would be evicted. Here are some pictures of our camp site.
